Bizarre Food Stories: The Canned Beans Incident

Today’s story is about BEANS… but more importantly, it’s about making sure you can DIGEST what you eat.

One day, Nigel had a student that wasn’t feeling well. The first question that comes to our minds when we hear this complaint is “what did you eat?”

So, Nigel asked them what they ate.

You want to know what they told him?

Beans right out of the can. No cooking, no added seasonings, nothing. Cold canned refried beans. No wonder the student felt ill.

A few days later, the student tried cooking the beans with oil and seasonings, and they reported feeling much better after eating that meal. Here’s what really happened -- they felt much better... after they ate a meal that they could actually digest.

The takeaway is this - the point of eating is to DIGEST your food. The point of eating is NOT just to get food down the gullet at all costs. Cooking doesn’t just “make the food nicer.” The sounds and smells of preparing a meal actually get your digestive system started BEFORE any food touches your tongue. That’s one reason that the student felt better after eating the cooked beans; because the cooking process enhanced their digestion.

If you’re unable to cook for whatever reason, you can still enhance your digestion by chewing your food, eating in a peaceful environment, and thinking happy thoughts while you’re eating.
